Joe Del Vicario, MD, FRCP(C) – President
Joe is an anesthesiologist at St. Paul’s Hospital who has extensive volunteer experience through surgical missions to Guatemala, the Philippines, and Uganda. He has participated in every H4H surgical mission to Guatemala since its inception, as well as in an H4H mission to the Philippines. Joe is the Chair of our Surgical Mission Committee and Medical Lead of the Guatemalan surgical missions.
Cheryl Davies, MEd, RN – Secretary
Cheryl is currently the Chief Operating Officer at BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, the largest maternity hospital in Canada and the only facility in BC devoted primarily to the health of women, newborns and their families. She has over 20 years experience in women’s health as a nurse, educator and executive leader, in both community and hospital settings. She has a wealth of board director and community development experience. She joined Health for Humanity in 2005, and has participated in several health missions in nursing, logistics and team leadership.
Gloria Garraway, RN
Gloria is a Clinical Nurse Leader on the Cardiac Surgery Intensive ward at St. Paul’s Hospital. Gloria has been active with H4H for many years, participating on the Surgical Committee. Gloria supports the surgical mission team as an organizer, leader, and clinical care: she has served as the H4H Surgical Mission’s Post-Anesthesia Recovery room head nurse for the past few years, ensuring patient safety and quality standards are met for optimal patient outcomes. Gloria has also contributed to H4H fundraising efforts at St. Paul’s Hospital. Gloria is well-respected by those who have the opportunity to work/volunteer with her as she consistently demonstrates a focused, calm, disciplined and supportive approach with others.
For the past 15 years, Karen has been the Principal consultant of K. Harrison & Associates. She has extensive experience in strategic planning. She is also a certified executive coach and human resources development professional. Karen is a member of the Rotary District 5040 Strategic Planning Team. In this role, she travels around BC to help Rotary clubs create annual strategic plans. Karen is the Chair of our Fundraising Committee.
Mike Morton, MD, FRCP(C)
Mike was the founding president of H4H. He is an anesthesiologist with experience in hospital administration and a keen interest in international health. In addition to serving as the Medical Lead for several H4H surgical missions, he has provided anesthesiology services for H4H missions in both Guatemala and the Philippines.
Ermin Badzak, Communications
Ermin is the owner of Badzak Creative, a still and motion pictures production company. After producing H4H’s Triage in Antigua documentary in 2016, Ermin joined the H4H as a journalist, documenting and reporting through social media. He continued to support H4H by building the communications and media presence.
He brings the skill set he acquired over the 20+ years he spent in video production, photography, print, design, and communications. Ermin is the Communications Lead on the Board of Directors.
Judy Rothwell, Treasurer
Judy is a professional accountant and previously a partner in the Vancouver office of KPMG International. She currently splits her time with her professional practice of providing financial, accounting and tax advice to individuals and businesses and volunteering with charitable non-profit organizations giving back to communities both locally and internationally. She has been a director and treasurer of a number of Canadian registered charities during the last 18 years. She has also led a number of short-term mission teams to Africa to work on various projects helping orphans and vulnerable children and youth.
Tim Sveinbjornson MD, FRCPC
Tim has participated in numerous humanitarian medical missions throughout his 30-year career as a physician. While serving as a general practitioner in the Canadian military he was sent to operations in Rwanda and Nairobi; later as a civilian anesthesiologist, he volunteered for missions to Guatemala and South Sudan. Currently, Tim is a staff anesthesiologist at Royal Columbian Hospital and clinical instructor for the UBC Faculty of Medicine, with a special interest in trauma care. Tim has returned to Guatemala several times since his first surgical mission in 2009 with Project Hands. His commitment to Health For Humanity began in 2014 through annual volunteer surgical missions to Obras Sociales Del S. Hermano Pedro Hospital in Antigua.
Brent William Caton MD, FRCP(C)
Dr. Brent Caton is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology , Pharmacology and Therapeutics at UBC and current head of Cardiac Anesthesia at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. He has participated in Surgical Missions in Guatemala since 2012. In 2014 he was the Co-founder of the CARE Team Service Society, a registered non-profit Society. He has served as a Director and Medical Lead since the inception of CARE.
Dr. Bakhet trained in Egypt and has Fellowship qualifications in Obstetrics and Gynecology in both the UK and Canada. He holds the academic appointments of Assistant Professor with UBC and Memorial University of Newfoundland in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His philanthropic work not only includes his volunteer work with H4H in Guatemala but he has ongoing volunteer commitments in his native Egypt, Ethiopia and in South Sudan where he has been playing a central role in the creation of a not-for-profit hospital.
Monica Froh, RN
Monica has over 35 years of experience in nursing, from cardiovascular and ophthalmology, over orthopedics, gynaecology, to cosmetics. She joined H4H in 2014. She is currently the Operating Room Coordinator at Valley Laser Eye Centre, as well as preparing the facility for accreditation with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.
